Antarctic Ice
The Distortion
Maybe because ice melting is such an obvious physical manifestation of warming, a lot of the distortions of the climate change deniers center around that. For example, they often twist facts or outright lie to say that the Antarctic ice is growing instead of shrinking.
The Truth
By every objective measure, the ice on our planet is melting. The specifics are legion – from the melting snows of Kilimanjaro to the retreating ice of the Arctic – but the real point is the global trend, and the facts are clear: the earth is losing ice at an alarming rate.
Generally speaking, if someone tries to cast doubt on the reality of climate change by pointing to a specific phenomenon in a specific location, you can discount them immediately. Climate change is a global phenomenon, and it’ll play out in different ways in different places. Some areas will get drier, some wetter, some much warmer, some not as warm.
As for the Antarctic, some areas grew thicker for a while because as the earth warms, it gets warm enough to snow in some areas of the Antarctic that were previously too cold to ever get much precipitation at all. So, in fact, the thickening in the middle was evidence supporting global warming, not contrary to it. But even that seems outdated, as recent studies by NOAA show the whole continent losing ice:
