The American Power Act and Jobs
The Distortion
Opponents of reform often attack any attempt to reform our energy economy using scary rhetoric about jobs, implying losses and slower job growth. After years of poor economic performance under the policies of the Bush Administration, our economy needs good jobs, and opponents of reform try to claim clean energy legislation will hurt those efforts.
The Truth
The truth is that this is as close to a slam dunk as you can get. Numerous studies have been done and all have the same conclusion: the American Power Act will cause significant job growth in the United States. The Peter G. Peterson Institute found it would create over 200,000 jobs yearly. A more recent study by Climate Works found that the APA would create nearly 500,000 jobs every year.
So while the actual number isn't exact in the studies, every reputable study done of the entire effects all show large benefits for our job market. Far from the claims of the critics, the American Power Act creates jobs while moving us to a new, cleaner, more prosperous economy. The claims of opponents are simply scare tactics designed to torpedo reform.
