Volcano Activity

The Distortion

Opponents of action on limiting carbon pollution have all kinds of facts they throw out to imply that the activities of humans are a small contributor to global carbon dioxide levels. One thing they often cite in the untrue statement that a single volcano eruption contributes more greenhouse gases than all human activity.

The Truth

This one is just wrong. Completely untrue. Empirically false. In short, anyone saying this has been lied to.

Volcanoes emit roughly 145-255 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere a year, depending on any particular year’s activity. Emissions from humans amount to about 30 billion tons a year. That works out to about, let’s see here … carry the one …  130 TIMES more carbon from human activity than ALL volcanic activity.

Sometimes, things aren’t that complicated. This one’s just flat-out wrong.
